The Plans We Make

It was a brisk fall morning as I was walking down the street from the grocery store parking lot, over to my doctor’s office. As I strolled along, I began to worry about the fact that my youngest son had woken up with a cold. It was the middle of the week and I had commitments in the coming days that I wasn’t sure if I was going to have to cancel. I didn’t want to miss out on the plans I'd made because I was excited to be apart of them.

Right there in the middle of my string of worrisome thoughts the Lord clearly spoke to me and said:

The plans you make are not yours to keep.

This is a hard truth to swallow, but it has helped me release the many things I hold onto too tightly.

You see, for as long as I can remember, I have been a planner. I’m the organized one and I like to stick to a schedule. When I was younger, even if one thing didn't go according to plan I was stretched thin with anxiety. It wasn’t healthy, but my goodness I had a hard time pivoting from what was already on the calendar.

Since moving out, getting married and having kids I have definitely grown in this area (I’m honestly not sure you have a choice once you become a Mom hahah). The thing is, I think we too easily forget that no matter what we fill our calendar with, it’s not guaranteed.

Even in Scripture we read:

“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” — yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will do this or that.”

- James 4:13-15 ESV

We don't know what tomorrow holds, but we do know Who hold us in the right here and now. Whether we are blessed with another day or more, the Lord will put us where He needs us to be. That might mean we have to miss out or rearrange things; but it's in these moments where we need to trust Him and remember that He has our best interest at heart.

The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. - Proverbs 16:9 ESV

When I reflect on how much I’ve changed from when I was a very stubborn hearted teenager, I see the biggest shift I made is accepting that God has a plan and purpose that far outweighs anything I could ever hope for. This shift came from surrendering what I thought was important and believing that God knows best.

If I just stop, close my eyes and sit for a really long moment and consider the infinity of my God;

Who painted the tapestry of the skies in one breath and spoke life into existence.

Who keeps the earth spinning at the right speed and just the right distance from the sun.

Who put His very own breath in my lungs and knows the number of hairs on my head.

Who is on His throne right now, watching and waiting patiently for the lost to receive grace.

Who is before the beginning and will be until after the end.

Who has never wandered from His plans or made a mistake in His decisions.

I cearly see that my God has control.

He always has and always will.

And there is so much freedom in releasing what I have planned and receiving what He has purposed.
