What Does It Mean to Be a New Creation in Christ?

Hey friend, welcome back to Rest and Remain — a small space in a big world meant to help you slow down and soak in God’s truth.
If you’ve noticed things have been a bit quiet around here over the past few months, thank you for your patience! This year has been incredibly full. Between homeschooling, creating new resources, getting situated on Pinterest, pouring into my email community, and staying active at church, my plate has been overflowing. It’s been a wonderful season, but I was thankful for the summer, which gave me some time to slow down and work on content for this space.
I originally planned to focus on book reviews this year, but the more I prayed, the more I felt God nudging me in a different direction. If you know me, you know I do my absolute best to move where God leads rather than just sticking to my own plans.
So instead, we are kicking off a series on Our Identity in Christ—starting with what it really means to be a new creation.
The Noise of the World vs. The Truth of God
Whether we realize it or not, the world is constantly trying to define us. It tries to shape our identity around our mistakes, our past, our achievements, our relationships, or the heavy expectations placed on us by others.
But God speaks a better word over His children. He speaks an unchanging truth that reaches into the depths of our souls to transform us from the inside out.
When you truly understand who you are in Christ, it changes absolutely everything.
Let’s look at 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV):
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come."
I love how this verse begins with the words "if anyone." This invitation isn't reserved for:
The "perfect" Christian
The person who has it all together
The person who finally fixed themselves
This invitation is for anyone, right in the middle of wherever they are.
Finding Your Identity as a New Creation In Christ
In John chapter 3, Jesus speaks with Nicodemus, a Jewish ruler filled with questions. Jesus tells him, "Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus is confused—he asks how a grown man could physically enter his mother's womb a second time! Jesus explains that He isn't talking about a physical birth, but a birth of the Spirit.
When we choose to follow Jesus, submit to His lordship, seek His forgiveness, and believe in His work on the cross, we are born again into a new creation through the Holy Spirit. Our physical bodies continue to age, but our spirits are completely brought back to life. We are brand new.
Your NEW identity is IN Christ!
Your past does not define you.
Your shame does not own you.
Your failures are not who you are.
Renewing Your Mind Daily
Even though we are made new, we often believe Jesus forgives us while still living like our "old self" gets the final say. Our minds get stuck replaying old, broken labels:
"I’m not enough."
"I’ll never change."
"I’m just too broken."
In Ephesians 4:22–24, Paul instructs us:
"...to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness."
This doesn't mean we will achieve flawless perfection overnight—that’s why we needed Jesus’ sacrifice in the first place! But it means your sin, shame, and past no longer have the authority to tell you who you are. Jesus does.
When old failures bring up shame, take those thoughts captive and declare: "I am not that person anymore. I am born again. I am new. I am who Jesus says I am."

Reflect and Pray
Before you go about your day, take a quiet moment to reflect on these two questions:
Am I truly living out of my identity as a new creation in Christ?
If not, what lies or old labels am I allowing to hold me back, and what truths can I start declaring today?
A Prayer for Your Week
Lord God,
Thank You for the gift of new life in Jesus. Thank You that our identity is not attached to our past, our failures, or the opinions of others, but is rooted entirely in who You say we are and what You have done for us. Help us live out of this truth today. Renew our minds and remind us that we are a new creation in You, and nothing can change that reality.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
