Seeing God Through the Right Lens: Why Your View of God Changes Everything
Who God Is Series: Introduction

In our last series together, we talked about three core pillars of our identity in Christ. We looked at how we have been made into a new creation—where our old life is gone and we choose to step into a new life with Christ. We reflected on how, being justified through faith, we are now at peace with God. Finally, we looked at what it means to be both rescued and redeemed from darkness through the power of the cross and resurrection.
While it is easy to have conversations about these truths, allowing them to settle and take root in our hearts can be a challenge. The primary reason living out our new identity in Christ feels so difficult is that we often lack a foundational understanding of who God is.
This is why, in this new series, we are looking at who God says He is according to His Word—focusing on different aspects of His character and how they apply to our daily lives.
Taking Inventory of Our Beliefs
To begin, we need to step back and take inventory of our personal beliefs about who God is and what has shaped those beliefs. If we are moving toward a broken image of God, we are moving toward the wrong image, which will directly affect our relationship with Him.
There are two major habits we need to stop doing:
Viewing God through human opinions: Seeing Him through a lens of what people have told us about who He is that is not rooted in Scripture.
Viewing God through past pain: Seeing Him through the lens of what has been done to us or against us.
If we have a skewed view of God, our understanding of our identity and purpose will be warped, and we will find ourselves walking in the wrong direction. How we see, know, and understand God matters because it directly influences how we interact with Him. It is all about learning to see God through the proper lens—by continually seeking Him through His Word and believing what He says about Himself.

What Scripture Says About Who God Is
Here are a few foundational passages that reveal the nature and character of God:
He is our Sovereign Creator
“Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb; I am the Lord, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.” — Isaiah 44:24
He is Holy and Unmatched
There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you: there is no rock like our God.” — 1 Samuel 2:2
He is Gracious and Just
“Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.” — Isaiah 30:18
He Holds All Power and Majesty
“Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Both riches and honour come from you, and you rule over all.” — 1 Chronicles 29:11–12
He is Ever-Present
“Am I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? ... Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord.” — Jeremiah 23:23–24

Why Your View of God Changes Everything
The more we gaze at God through His Word and spend quiet time in His presence, the more we grow in our knowledge of Him. We begin to see the fullness of His character and sovereignty.
As we truly get to know Him, we recognize and appreciate His power, authority, and holiness. This draws us into a position of humble submission to His will, trust in His sovereignty, and a heart of worship—because we see and experience just how magnificent He truly is. In His goodness and wisdom, He always knows what is best for us.
If there is one key takeaway to carry with you today, it is this:
We don't study who God is simply so we can know more about God. We study who God is because what we believe about God affects everything else.
It affects how we see ourselves, how we understand our purpose, how we respond to suffering, how we pray, how we trust, how we obey, and how we rest.
Keep walking hand in with Jesus.
With love, your sister in Christ,
